Towards Blue Beauty

First there was clean beauty, a trend in the Beauty industry that emphasized natural and sustainable products. Instead of focusing merely on looking good, clean beauty sought to eliminate harmful, synthetic ingredients in favor of natural, organic formulations made from ethical, sustainable sources.

Following on the heels of clean beauty was the green beauty movement. Greater consideration was given to environmental friendliness and sustainability using ingredients grown without pesticides or GMOs. As much weight was given to environmental packaging with a move to biodegradable, recyclable, or refillable containers.

Now progressive brands are embracing the latest trend toward blue beauty. This movement builds upon the momentum of clean and green beauty with a laser focus on making products that are not just safe for the environment -- and in particular marine ecosystems -- but also having a net positive effect on the environment.

Blue beauty is a journey, not a destination. But it’s a journey that SABIYA wholeheartedly embraces. As voyagers, we like journeys.

Opting for Non-Terrestrial Ingredients

As big fans of the earth -- we think it’s a great place to sail -- we embrace the earth-positivity of sustainable marine aquaculture. We are constantly researching and adopting ingredients like sea kelp and pearl powder. We call our unique blend of sea ingredients SeaSolution and we are excited about the powerful skin benefits that comes from these ingredients. Equally exciting are the environmental ramifications. Here are a few highlights:

  • Sea kelp does not need any fresh water or even soil to grow
  • Sea kelp does not require fertilizer of any kind, which keeps more phosphorus out of our watersheds and oceans
  • Sea kelp requires almost no fossil fuel to plant and cultivate, and many varieties are harvested without cultivation
  • Sea kelp is carbon negative; It absorbs carbon dioxide (the leading greenhouse gas) from the atmosphere and stores it in its tissues

HAWAII+ APPROVED

Hawaii was the first place to ban the sale and use of sunscreens containing harmful chemical sun filters. Though still approved by the FDA, research has convincingly shown that they are devastating to marine environments. A proposed ban would also prohibit sunscreens containing Avobenzone (the most common chemical sun filter) along with Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, and Octocrylene, which are now prohibited except for medical necessity.

SABIYA is a 100% mineral sunscreen that does not harm marine environments. Our products are allowed in Hawaii.

Not long after Hawaii passed its ban, other at-risk locations passed similar bans. These include:

  • Palau
  • Key West
  • US Virgin Islands
  • Aruba
  • Thailand

We expect more at-risk places to pass similar bans soon.

As mariners, it is our privilege and responsibility to care for fragile environments. SABIYA sunscreens may legally be sold and used in all of these beautiful places.
